I think I get Social Networking

It’s a strange phenomenon that probably says something, I don’t know what, about your personality. I’ve been on Twitter for maybe a year now - go ahead, look - and I came to a realization tonight. I think social networking might be an outlet for people who have difficulty expressing themselves. For some reason it’s easier to say some things to a bunch of people you barely know at best, than the closest people in your life. Not big deal stuff, just stuff. I really should have studied psych more in college as there’s probably a name for this condition.

I follow just a few people, mostly at random that I’ve never met, but I feel like I know them just a little bit. In fact, it just dawned on me, I feel like I know these people very casually. I know what they are up to when they are taking a break from life, the things they like to talk about, but I don’t know about the things that supposedly matter. And they know the same about me. I think it’s because we really have very little frame of reference for each other that we don’t seem to judge what each other says, and that’s pretty freeing.
